Author Lawrence Wright considered running for Texas governor

New Yorker staff writer and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright said Thursday morning he considered running for Texas governor this election cycle.

Wright told Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith that he considered running against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott following a legislative session in which social conservative issues like the “bathroom bill” went unchallenged by the governor. He said he was encouraged to run at the time when the governor didn’t seem to have any Democratic challengers.

Wright, who has a new book, “God Save Texas: A Journey into the Soul of the Lone Star State,” said he was ultimately overruled by his family. He also acknowledged that it would’ve been an uphill battle.

“The chances of anyone winning that race were slim,” Wright said.
