What is it with celebrities suddenly believing themselves capable of running for – and holding – office?
It could be the fact that we have a social media-obsessed, former reality television star currently inhabiting the White House as 45th president. But I digress.
This past week, rumor had it that musician Kid Rock was eyeing a Senate run. Thankfully, that seems to have been a publicity stunt.
Now, it appears that Bruce “Caitlyn” Jenner, Republican male, is mulling over a potential run for the U.S. Senate.
The Hill reports:
Olympic gold medalist and transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner is the latest celebrity to reveal she has considered lanching a run for Senate, telling radio host John Catsimatidis she is in the process of determining her future in activism and politics.
“I have considered it. I like the political side of it,” Jenner, who is a Republican, told Catsimatidis on AM 970 in New York.
“The political side of it has always been very intriguing to me. Over the next six months or so, I gotta find out where I can do a better job. Can I do a better job from the outside? Kind of working the perimeter of the political scene, being open to talking to anybody? Or are you better from the inside, and we are in the process of determining that,” she said.
“Yeah but I would look for a senatorial run,” she continued.
Jenner told CNN’s Don Lemon in April she would “seriously look at a run for office.”
Recently, Jenner has been making the rounds in D.C. and meeting with members of the Trump administration, as Susan Wright noted. Not only has he met with the president, but on Thursday, Jenner conferred with Ambassador Nikki Haley to discuss LGBT issues at home and abroad.
It’s difficult to say whether Jenner’s announcement of political aspiration is an attempt to continue grabbing headlines, or if it’s serious contemplation. If the latter, it will be interesting to see if friendship with President Trump translates into actual support for the leftover kind-of Kardashian.
I, for one, don’t believe that celebrity gives one the sole experience necessary to run for – or hold – office, especially something as influential as the United States Senate.
But that’s where we are the moment. The circus-like campaign season continues to bleed on into business as usual.
