Governor Abbott Suspends Waiting Period For Insurance Companies To Pay Claims To Vehicle Owners Impacted By Harvey

Governor Greg Abbott today took action to expedite insurance claims for Texans whose vehicles have been totaled by Hurricane Harvey.

Governor Greg Abbott today took action to expedite insurance claims for Texans whose vehicles have been totaled by Hurricane Harvey. Working with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV), the Governor suspended a statute and rule requiring a 30-day waiting period and notification requirements for insurance companies that are unable to obtain current vehicle titles prior to paying claims on nonrepairable vehicles. This suspension will alleviate the burden on vehicle owners and will expedite the claims process, resulting in a faster claim payments from the insurance companies to the owners of nonrepairable vehicles. The TxDMV estimates that over 500,000 vehicles were damaged by the storm.

“The last thing the victims of this storm need is the burden of procedural red tape while trying to get their lives back on track,” said Governor Abbott. “Suspending this rule will make it easier for those currently without transportation to get needed assistance from their insurance companies. As the recovery process starts to take shape in Texas, I will continue to do what I can to make sure Texans are getting what they need in every way possible.”
