The Cherokee Independent School District soon will make improvements to its lone football field, thanks to a $1,945 community development grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority.

The football field is unlevel, creating tripping hazards for anyone walking or running on it. The grant will allow district officials to level the field so it can be more safely enjoyed by students and the greater community alike.

“Our town does not have a park or central gathering place, so the football field serves as a hub for the community,” said Cherokee ISD Superintendent Eldon Franco. “The grant will go a long way in allowing us to better foster community fellowship. And, for this, we are grateful to LCRA.”

The community grant is one of a number of grants recently awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program. The program provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s wholesale electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves.

Applications for the next round of grants are due Jan. 31. More information is available at
