The Maxwell Social Club soon will have a new air conditioner, new gutters and a fresh coat of exterior paint, thanks to a $19,518 Community Development Partnership Program grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative.

Maxwell Social Club opened its doors in 1952 and has hosted hundreds of community events, family reunions and weddings. It’s also a place for members and nonmembers alike to enjoy fun and fellowship. The grant, along with $4,880 in local contributions, will help the social club remain a popular community meeting place for years to come. The new air-conditioning system will be better equipped to handle the Texas heat and the gutters will keep water from pooling in front of the building near the entrance.

“The club’s founders wanted to give back to the community,” said Kirby Moore, the social club’s 1st vice president. “Apart from our regular civic engagement, opening our building to outside groups for a nominal fee is another way that we serve others. This grant will allow us to make much-needed improvements so that the building is a comfortable and inviting place for all.”

The social club regularly hosts groups from Buda, Kyle, Lockhart, Martindale and San Marcos. At times, it has hosted guests from as far away as Austin, Luling, Round Rock and Prairie Lea.

The community grant is one of a number of grants recently awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program. The program provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s wholesale electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. Bluebonnet is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and a partner in the grant program.

Applications for the next round of grants will be accepted July 1-July 31. More information is available at lcra.org/cdpp.
