LCRA, Hamilton County Electric Co-op Award $25,0000 to Bend Community Center

LCRA and Hamilton County Electric Cooperative representatives present a $25,000 grant to the Bend Community Center to upgrade its kitchen. The grant is part of LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program. Pictured, from left to right, are: Lori A. Berger, LCRA Board member; Joe Raibourn, Hamilton County Electric Cooperative director of office services; Barbara Brister-Bell, Bend Community Center Association secretary-treasurer; Phil B. McCoury, association president; Dennis Scroggins, association parliamentarian; Martha Leigh M. Whitten, LCRA Board member; and Steve Dyer, LCRA Governmental and Regional Affairs representative.

The Bend Community Center will upgrade its kitchen thanks to a $25,000 community development grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Hamilton County Electric Cooperative.

The community center will use the grant, along with local matching funds, to add new cabinets, countertops, a sink, a faucet and a water heater. The new cabinets will be ergonomically designed and will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Bend Community Center, also referred to as the School House, uses the only building remaining from the Bend School System. The center is located at the heart of the community, sitting atop a hill that overlooks the Colorado River.

The kitchen upgrades will bring a good deal of excitement to the community and likely will lead to more events being held at the facility, said Debbie Hicks, vice president of the Bend Community Center Association.

“We see this as a stepping stone to greater use of the School House, while also preserving the history of the facility,” she said.

The community grant is one of a number of grants recently awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program. The program provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. Hamilton County Electric Cooperative is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and a partner in the grant program.

Applications for the next round of grants are due July 31. More information is available at
