LCRA and Pedernales Electric Cooperative representatives present a $22,487 grant to the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office for new portable radios. The Burnet County Sheriff’s Office will replace 13 of its handheld radios thanks to a $22,487 community development grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Pedernales Electric Cooperative.
The grant, along with $5,622 in local matching funds, will be used to purchase new portable radios to replace the outdated, unreliable ones now in use. The new radios will decrease response times and improve communication between officers and dispatchers.
With more than 46,000 residents, Burnet County is one of the fastest growing counties in Texas. Burnet County Sheriff Calvin Boyd says the new radios will help his office provide enhanced security and protection for the people it serves.
“We are excited and honored to have received this grant from LCRA and PEC,” Boyd said. “These funds will help us outfit our officers with the latest in communications technology while allowing for increased interoperability with neighboring agencies.”
The Burnet County Sheriff’s Office employs 52 full-time officers and serves all of Burnet County, including the municipalities of Burnet, Marble Falls, Bertram, Granite Shoals, Cottonwood Shores and Horseshoe Bay. The department also conducts boat patrols on several of the Highland Lakes.
The community grant is one of a number of grants recently awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program. The program provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s wholesale electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. Pedernales Electric Cooperative is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and a partner in the grant program.
