Mark Warner: Maybe There Really Isn’t Any Collusion

Virginia Senator Mark Warner was a guest on the New Yorker Radio Hour–who knew there was such a thing. He’s a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee (the irony of Mark Warner being on a committee about intelligence is nearly too much to bear) and so he was asked about the work of that committee which will start releasing parts of its report in about thirty days.

Warner said that the committee is still receiving documents and information for the investigation. The panel is also still conducting interviews of Trump associates. Former Trump aide Sam Nunberg is set to be interviewed this week.

“I’m not going to weigh in until we see everyone,” Warner said.

[The New Yorker’s David] Remnick asked Warner whether he believes members of the campaign directly coordinated with Russians or, instead, whether Trump associates who met with Russians were merely “duped.”

“This may all be simply a set of coincidences or it may be … it was not the sophistication to realize what was happening,” said Warner.

Indeed. The only way the story makes sense is if you start with the conclusion that Trump worked with the Russians and then work backwards to find anything that can be construed to support that thesis. Perhaps Warner had a taste of the coincidence fallacy himself when text messages showing him trying to meet with both the author of the Trump dossier and a blacklisted Russian oligarch surfaced.)

While Warner is keeping an open mind, the fact is that after a year of this nonsense, if there were witnesses or documents that would qualify as the proverbial smoking gun, Warner would have seen them.

Here is the radio enterview in its entirety.
