Not Over: AOC May Have Won a Battle Against Amazon, but New Reports Show They Intend to Win the War

When last we left you, Amazon had backed out of a deal to build their second headquarters in the Queens part of New York City. It’s a deal that would have brought 25,000 jobs to New York, but it was nixed after Democratic politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14) voiced strong opposition.

Though Ocasio-Cortez and her staff cheered the loss of jobs and revenue, Amazon – instead of giving up altogether – decided to shuffle the deck a bit and weigh their other options for NYC.

And as the New York Post reported yesterday, they’ve got their eye on some prime real estate on Manhattan’s west side:

After walking away from a deal to build a headquarters on the Queens waterfront in Long Island City, Amazon is back to shopping for office space on Manhattan’s West Side, sources tell The Post.

The tech giant has been in talks with owners of two shiny new skyscrapers located just one block west of Penn Station — the newly built One Manhattan West and its soon-to-be sister project, Two Manhattan West, sources tell The Post.

The online retailer is seeking “at least 100,000 square feet or much more” — just to start, one well-placed source said.

The paper notes that Amazon is also looking at the James A. Farley building, which is nearby.

The Real Deal reports that Queens, which lost out on the original Amazon deal, may be in the running for another “megadevelopment” deal:

Meanwhile, New York City officials are currently considering the possibility of bringing another megadevelopment to Queens as a replacement for the planned Amazon campus.

If Amazon goes through with their plans the second time around, and if Queens does end up scoring another big deal, that will make a majority of New Yorkers very happy. But in the aftermath – and come primary time, they shouldn’t forget who helped kill the initial deal in the first place.
