November 1, 2017 Texas Comptroller Visits Corpus Christi on Tour of Texas (CORPUS CHRISTI) — On the South Texas stop of his Good for Texas Tour: Manufacturing Edition, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar today visited Cheniere Energy in Corpus Christi. “Cheniere Energy represents Texas’ chemical product manufacturing subsector, which is absolutely essential to our daily needs, as it creates goods such as household cleaning products, beauty products, pharmaceuticals and diagnostic substances, agricultural fertilizers and much more,” Hegar said. During his Good for Texas Tour: Manufacturing Edition, Hegar is touring facilities, meeting with local officials and sharing the results of a study the Comptroller’s office recently completed examining the economic impact of the manufacturing industry. Texas’ chemical product manufacturing subsector is responsible for $36.6 billion in annual exports, about 320,000 direct and indirect jobs and $55.5 billion in contributions to the state’s gross domestic product (GDP), the greatest amount of any manufacturing subsector in the state. “The basic chemical manufacturing industry, makers of petrochemicals, industrial gas and ethyl alcohol is highly concentrated in Texas,” Hegar said. “In fact, in 2016 two-thirds of all U.S. petrochemical production jobs were in Texas. Chemical manufacturing employment has remained stable since early 2015, alleviating the effects of job losses in other manufacturing subsectors caused by declining crude oil prices.” In all, Texas manufacturers were responsible for 3 million direct and indirect jobs in 2016, as well as $210.3 billion in exports and $225.8 billion in GDP.
