Roy Moore Threatens the Washington Post With Lawsuit Over Allegations Against Him

Alabama Republican Roy Moore is setting up to hit the Washington Post with a lawsuit over the allegations that he had sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl while Moore was in his 30’s.

According to AP, Moore told his supporters in Huntsville, Alabama on Sunday that the WaPo story was “fake news” and “a desperate attempt to stop my political campaign.”

Moore added that the newspaper “will be sued,” a declaration that received applause from the crowd.

“Why would they come now? Because there are groups that don’t want me in the United States Senate,” Moore added, speaking on the allegations only surfacing now. “We do not plan to let anybody deter us from this race.”

Despite Moore’s insistence that the allegations are completely fabricated, GOP members are encouraging Moore to drop out of the race:

In the immediate aftermath of the Post report, a wave of national Republican leaders called for Moore to drop out of the race if the allegations are true. They included the head of the House Freedom Caucus, Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Over the weekend, more Republicans distanced themselves from Moore, including Sens. Bob Corker of Tennessee and Tim Scott of South Carolina.

Trump himself has stated that he has every confidence that Moore is innocent. But should he be found guilty of the allegations, Trump stated that he has every confidence that Moore will “do the right thing” and abandon his attempt at a Senator’s seat.
