Sebastian Gorka’s Broken Moral Compass Versus Jonah Goldberg’s Hypocrisy Meter

I don’t think anyone would deny that Donald Trump has been a polarizing figure in American politics. Tribalism of left and right has probably seldom been as stark as it is now. That gets a lot of attention but Trump has also polarized the right in many ways. One of the most troubling divisions is between the those who play the game to unconditionally defend anything the President says or does and those who value logical consistency and judging politicians by the same standards regardless of party.

A prime example of that division sprouted up on Twitter last night starting with a tweet by C.J. Pearson, another mythical wunderkind whose notoriety derives from his youth rather than any particularly unique insights. His tweet just echoes the half truth that most of Team Trump is repeating. Sure the left is hypocrtical, but those on the right dismissing Trump’s moral failings have no leg to stand on when pointing out intellectual dishonesty.

Former Trump adviser Sebastian Gorka seems to think this is a “BOOM” tweet for some reason even though the party that was morally outraged by Bill Clinton celebrates his fellow degenerate Donald Trump because they like his policies.

Gorka and others are the equivalent of the left wing feminists who defended Bill Clinton’s well documented womanizing and set aside their belief that all women who report being raped deserve to be heard to support him. They abandoned what they claimed to hold dear in order to support their tribe’s current chief. They were justifiably ridiculed for it, by many on the right who are now doing exactly the same thing for their own leader.

Jonah Goldberg has been one of the leading voices against the moral compasses pointing toward Mar-a-Lago rather than true north. He wasn’t feeling Gorka’s “BOOM.”

Then Gorka displayed a precipitous drop in self awareness.

Gorka is simultaneously defending Trump’s dalliances with porn stars and indirectly condemning the left’s tolerance of Bill Clinton being a sexual predator—and he’s accusing Jonah of not being able to recognize hypocrisy.

They say that in an insane world the sane man must appear insane. It seems to also be true that in a world of hypocrits, the logically consistent man appears hypocritical. Moral relativism is a failure of basic logic. It is the acceptance that two mutually contradictory statements can be true simultaneously. I expect that from the hysterical left. Until recently I thought the right was better.

One of the most brilliant passages in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy perfectly captures the failure of the kind of moral relativism we’re witnessing among those who once shouted passionately that “Character matters!

‘How shall a man judge what to do in such times?’

‘As he ever has judged,’ said Aragorn. ‘Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man’s part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house.’

This isn’t even about Trump anymore. He’s just a symptom of the overall disease. We constantly complain about the general sleaziness of Washington politics and politicians, yet we find reasons to explain it away when its someone on our team who is sleazy or crooked. Too many on the right dismiss sleaze on technicalities for Republicans when they would be pummeling any Democrat suffering from the same sort of “bimbo eruptions” Trump is currently battling.

If Obama had a porn star in his past Sean Hannity would still be covering it today, yet the tribalists refuse to even acknowledge the possibility that Trump is a creep.

Is it too much to ask that we hold everyone in Washington to the same standards?

Until we do though, the quality of our leadership will continue sliding into the gutter.
