Since I turned 30 I have always made it a point each year to do something I have never done before. In the beginning it was adventurous and exciting, but age and injuries tend to make you rethink some of your options. As I got older the choices became less physical but still were unique and exciting. Sometimes it was as simple as taking my first yoga class.
This year I accomplished it without even thinking about it. I don’t make a list, I just keep aware of things to do which I haven’t done. Sometimes someone offers you an opportunity. Earlier in the year I was offered a road trip thru the length of Mexico down to Guatemala. i accepted because it sounded fun and it was something I hadn’t done before. It was the scariest and stupidest thing I have done in a long time. The trip was five days of adrenaline rush and state of constant fear. After months I can look back on it with a little less anxiety and some romanticism. It was something I hadn’t done and did.
However if I had known I would do something today which I had also never done and which would give me such a joyous sense of accomplishment, I could have saved all the stress from my Mexico trip. Out of necessity I had to learn to sew a button today. How simple is this act? 54 years of life and not once had I sewed a button or thought of it. As much as the brown in me feels like an old soul, there are parts of our new tech world which I find astonishing. YouTube is an amazing resource for humanity. There is a lot of junk on there, however you can find videos on every type of problem and solution you desire. So i searched and in seven minutes I knew how to sew a button. I had no idea I would feel such pride in adding another skill to my skill set. Can you add sewing a button as a skill on LinkedIn? The bucket list of life doesn’t have to be glamorous and dangerous. It can be something as simple as sewing a button. The brown in me now is much closer to being independent. As an added bonus the stitching now allows me to pull a Rambo should i need to sew myself or any other human up in the wild. I am ready and prepared.
