An illegal immigrant who gained notoriety early in the year struck and killed a father of five late last week. CNN has previously profiled him in a sympathetic manner, sharing his story of hiding out in a church during the government shutdown to avoid a deportation order.
Here’s some of what CNN wrote.
An undocumented immigrant in Colorado says he’s taken shelter in a church because the government shutdown leaves him with no other choice.
Miguel Ramirez Valiente is facing a deportation order — but his lawyer says right now he has no way to fight it.
Most immigration courts are shuttered because of the shutdown. Judges are only hearing the cases of detained immigrants, while other cases are being postponed. But Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s fugitive operations and removal divisions are still operating.
So Ramirez Valiente stood at the pulpit at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Wednesday and told reporters he was seeking sanctuary to fight for the chance to remain with his wife and three children.
His story at the time was that he never received notice before he was ordered deported. That’s not an actual legal defense. A case was re-opened by ICE against him after he got a DUI leading to the revocation of his license in 2018. He had past arrests for domestic abuse as well. An acquaintance told Denver’s Channel 7 that Valiente was an abuser of alcohol.
His probation from the DUI had just been extended because he failed to even complete his community service or the court ordered therapy for alcoholism.
Now, a father for five children is dead because Valiente continued to flaunt the law by driving on a revoked license.
According to press reports, Miguel Ramirez Valiente was charged with careless driving with a revoked license after he over-corrected his truck while driving on a state highway near Colorado Springs, hitting Sean Buchanan.
Buchanan was riding a motorcycle when he was hit by Ramirez Valiente, who came to the U.S. from El Salvador 14 years ago.
Ramirez Valiente has several prior charges on his arrest record.
According to Denver’s ABC news affiliate, The Denver Channel, Ramirez Valiente was charged with reckless endangerment in 2011 and domestic violence in 2016.
This is a man who had no business being in the country. He was also a man who had no business driving a car. Yet, he was doing both, in violation of the law because a sanctuary city protected him. These are the real costs of illegal immigration and they are far too often ignored by the media because they choose to push their narrative instead.
Yes, I get that it’s sad when someone who broke the law gets deported, separating him/her from their children temporarily. But that’s far more just than an American citizen being killed by an illegal immigrant who has zero respect for the law.
I’d challenge any media personality or activist to look this woman in the face and tell her that Valiente had a right to be here.

Whether Valiente was driving drunk again during this accident hasn’t been revealed yet by authorities. The chances are certainly better than zero given his history.
This has to stop. It’s not just and moral to continue to allow the flaunting of US law, putting kids and migrants in danger trying to cross the border with the help or drug cartels. It’s also not just and moral for a father to be dead right now because local authorities are ignoring immigration laws.
I’m tired of the biased stories that only focus on the plight of migrants with CNN shoving mics in kid’s faces so they can get their viral video. There are real costs for American citizens as well and it’s about time that gets highlighted.
