LA GRANGE, Texas – The La Grange Noon Lions Club will purchase and install a canopy over playground equipment at the Fayette Public Library to provide a safer, more attractive play area for children, thanks to a $23,925 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and the City of La Grange.
The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with $7,975 in matching contributions, will allow the Lions Club to install a canopy to make the downtown playground equipment usable even during hot summer days.
“We want the playground to be accessible to children year-round, but even touching it on our hottest days can leave a burn,” said Ken Morris, Lions Club International Foundation coordinator. “This canopy will help prevent first- and second-degree burns and make the playground more appealing during the summer.”
Morris said that in addition to protecting children from the sun, the canopy will also help protect the equipment and extend its usable life.
“The Lions Club is also excited that LCRA and the City of La Grange are helping in the growing efforts to encourage kids to put down their electronic toys and games, get out of the house and enjoy fresh air and sunshine,” Morris said. “Playing together helps kids have fun, get exercise and expand their social skills, especially during summer months when school is out and more kids are potentially isolated from their peers. In the small town of La Grange, we have few opportunities for this besides our playground and equipment.”
This grant is one of a number of grants recently awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s wholesale electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. The City of La Grange is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and a partner in the grant program.
