Have you noticed how people like to use quotes to justify their positions or arguments. Usually it’s religious or some old English playwright. As if a sentence from some dead person can make everything right. We usually don’t even know if the quote is correct. The brown in me use to tell my children when in doubt in school, use your African grandfather as someone to quote. Assign any thought to him and see how important it becomes.
“My grandfather in Africa use to say to me, it’s true if its told to you by an elder.”
The other amazing thing about quoting books and dead ones is there is no way to prove it wrong. Also you can use the quotes in any form you desire to prove which ever point you want to make. The context is lost in time.
Example 1
A woman says to a man: A man can and will sexually abuse every woman in the world.
The man replies: With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible. Mark 10: 27
Don’t you love also how they add verbal footnotes, as if we were going to pull out the bible and check.
Example 2
An Arab man says to a woman wearing a burka; You know I have been working hard, and killing all these infidels and what I need now to help me feel good is sex. You need to have sex with me, because its the good thing to do.
The woman slaps him and he grabs her arms and quotes; “And spend of your substance in cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good.” 2:195 Al Bakara.
So in today’s world when you are fed up with news and life;
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Mathew 11:28
Read this column because; “That is the straight path”. | Surah Ali ‘Imran 3:51
