The Oakalla Public Library will be more comfortable and energy-efficient thanks to a $4,590 community development grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Pedernales Electric Cooperative.
The Friends of the Oakalla Public Library will use the Community Development Partnership Program grant to replace 10 old single pane windows with energy-efficient double pane windows and insulate the attic space.
“Our library is much more than just books,” said Tricia Pratt, Oakalla librarian. “It’s the community gathering place for this whole area. The new windows and insulation will make the space much more comfortable and inviting year-round, and reduce our energy bills, too.”
The library moved last year into a circa 1925 church building that had not been used for about 10 years. Members of the community helped fund other needed renovations, including installing new plumbing, a new restroom and lighting. The library uses window units to cool and heat the space, and modern windows and insulation are expected to greatly reduce energy usage at the library.
“We’re coming up on our first anniversary in the library’s new location,” Pratt said. “The community really came together to support the library’s move, and this grant allows us to keep the momentum going.”
The community grant is one of a number of grants recently awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program. The program provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s wholesale electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. Pedernales Electric Cooperative is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and a partner in the grant program.
