The City of Brenham Police Department now can purchase a new removable bollard system to help control traffic and protect the public during downtown events, thanks to a $23,500 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority.
The 47 movable bollards will enable police to easily block off downtown streets for pedestrians to prevent damage to property and threats to life from vehicles during festivals and other special events.
“The new bollard system will help our police department protect the many citizens and visitors who gather downtown for the more than 15 events each year,” said Dane Rau, City of Brenham public works director. “Police will be able to more efficiently and effectively close down streets and prevent vehicular traffic from entering without having to staff each intersection with officers.”
Rau said the removable bollards are an excellent public safety solution for areas that often switch between dedicated pedestrian use and vehicle traffic, allowing for removal and replacement as traffic needs dictate.
The community grant is awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s wholesale electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. The City of Brenham is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and a partner in the grant program.
