LCRA and Bluebonnet Electric Co-op award $50,000 grant for fire station

LCRA and Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative representatives present a $50,000 grant to the Delhi Volunteer Fire Department for improvements to the fire station. The grant is part of LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program. Pictured, from left to right, are: Danny Rodgers, Delhi VFD chief; Dee Rodgers, VFD secretary; Ray Rodgers, VFD first responder; Rick Arnic, LCRA governmental affairs representative; Tom Will, Caldwell County constable and VFD first responder; Sandra Wright “Sandy” Kibby, LCRA Board member; Cindy Wooley, VFD treasurer; Lori A. Berger, LCRA Board member; Eric Bastien, VFD first responder; Milton Shaw, Bluebonnet Board director; Billy Platt, VFD supporter; Betty Platt, VFD supporter; Allison Bastien, VFD supporter; and Joyce Buckner, Bluebonnet community development representative.

The Delhi Volunteer Fire Department will add plumbing, interior wall frames, utilities and other building necessities to its new fire station with the help of a $50,000 community development grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative.

The grant will provide funds to help prepare the driveway for fire department apparatus, and install restrooms, air conditioning and interior walls. The building will provide a secure place for the department to keep its emergency response vehicles and equipment, provide a training facility and serve as a civic center available for community functions.

“Currently, several apparatuses are being housed at responders’ residences,” said Dee Rodgers, Delhi VFD secretary. “Unfortunately, this can add to our response time. The community has been planning and saving for this new station for many years, and we are so appreciative to LCRA and Bluebonnet for this grant. This facility will be able to serve the community of Delhi for generations to come.”

The department earlier completed exterior walls of the new fire station, and plans to add a kitchen soon.

In addition to creating a building to house and protect all the Fire Department’s vehicles, the new fire station will be able to host training sessions for volunteer firefighters and other first responders.

The new facility also will provide the community a place for fundraisers, church group get-togethers and other events. It will be available for reunions birthdays, anniversaries, receptions or family celebrations.

The community grant is one of a number of grants recently awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program. The program provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and a partner in the grant program.

Applications for the next round of grants are due July 31. More information is available at lcra.org/cdpp.
