WAELDER, Texas – The City of Waelder, a small community with only one park, will receive a new playscape, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority.
The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with $6,705 in matching contributions, will allow for a much-needed upgrade to the deteriorated playscape at Waelder City Park.
“City Park has had very few improvements,” said Melinda Caballero, Waelder city secretary. “The playground is popular and is used a lot, but the playscape is old and unsafe. There are sharp edges on some of the equipment, and we’d hate for a child to be injured.”
“We want to provide a modern, safe area for children to play, and we are very happy and grateful LCRA is helping our community make these necessary upgrades to our park,” she said.
The park hosts numerous community gatherings such as birthday parties, reunions, school events and festivals. The new upgrades will make the area more inviting to everyone who uses the park, especially people with children, and will have a positive impact to the surrounding cities, including Gonzales, Flatonia, Moulton, Luling and beyond.
This grant is one of a number of grants recently awarded through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which provides economic development and community assistance grants to cities, counties, volunteer fire departments, regional development councils and other nonprofit organizations in LCRA’s wholesale electric and water service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. The City of Waelder is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and a partner in the grant program.
